We’ve been telling Ken for years that he needs to open a meadery, if only so the rest of us will be able to get Heart of Darkness (what? You don’t know what that is? Dude, it is *phenomenal* mead!) outside of the Mazer Cup awards ceremony. And now he’s going pro (at least officially – he’s always been a pro to us!). So those of you in the Detwa area and surrounding Michigan towns will soon have not one, but 2 meaderies in Ferndale to get mead. I only hope that I’ll be able to sweet-talk Ken into saving me a bottle or 2 so I can hopefully get up to Michigan this summer to visit family and swing through to visit and pick up some mead before it sells out.
And trust me, it will. If you like good mead, then you need to stay up on this debut, because believe me, Ken’s first run will almost certainly sell out almost as fast as he can bottle it…..
The Detroit area is developing into a real hotspot for mead, believe it or not. The suburb of Ferndale, which is already home to the B. Nektar Meadery, will soon add a second distillery of the alcoholic drink created by fermenting honey and water.
Schramm’s Mead plans to open this May in downtown Ferndale at the site of an old record store on Nine Mile Road, Patch reports.
Ken Schramm, the proprietor of the new meadery, has a wealth of experience crafting the beverage dating back to 1989. Not only has he written a book on the subject, but, working with the Ann Arbor Brewers Guild in 1990, he helped found the nation’s only mead-specific competition, the Mazer Cup, according to his website.
“Schramm’s Mead will be a craft meadery, hopefully in the best sense of the term. Our goal is to see how deliciously Schramm’s can make each mead we create,” Schramm said in an address to the Ferndale City Council reprinted on his company’s Facebook page. “We will use U.S.-made ingredients, and preferably Michigan-made ingredients wherever possible.”
She is also an experienced marketing coach and consultant who has recently decided to focus her marketing expertise exclusively on the craft beverage market to help meaderies, cideries, breweries and distilleries expand their business and get more customers while doing what they love.
