4-23-24 Tonight we’re headed to Arizona to talk with Uwe Boer, meadmaker at Celestial Artisan Meadery.

Uwe was born in 1960 in Dortmund, Germany and lived there until the age of 21.

He graduated with a degree in business, and immigrated to the US later that year, after several years of preparation. He came to live in San Diego, CA and worked in an industrial environment, working in production and business management until moving to Phoenix, AZ in 1986 to start a new career in brewing.
Growing up in Dortmund, one of the largest beer producing towns in the world, he developed an appreciation of beer and the German beer culture. Hoppy Pilseners from the region are still his favorite beer style.
After moving to San Diego, with the Craft Brew movement emerging, he started home brewing in 1991 and making Mead the same year. In 1996 he moved to Phoenix, AZ to start a new career as Brewmaster for a start -up Microbrewery, and still manages a brewery to this day. Brewing became a career, and making Mead was a hobby.
He was a member of a home-brew club with a strong focus on Mead making. He started entering Mead competitions, and Mead judging and created a Mead – only competition.
Uwe’s passion for making mead and sharing his passion with others grew strong during that time leading him to start his own Meadery.
He spent several years developing recipes and procedures for commercial production.
Celestial Artisan Meadery was created with his friends and business partners Heather and Ron Hurst-Kline, and started distribution in AZ in February of 2022. The cultural history holds a special mystique for Uwe, along with mead’s simplicity and wide versatility of flavors. Celestial Artisan Meadery, in fact, gets its name from a combination of honoring the tradition of meads throughout history and mythology. His passion for mead-making was met with perfect timing to open Celestial Artisan Meadery. Heather Hurst-Kline, the Meadery’s co-owner, retired from 30 years in healthcare to join Uwe in fulfilling his dream of owning his own business. Heather had wanted to start a family business where her two sons, Jacob and Alec, could be involved. Heather and Uwe had been friends for years, and when Uwe shared his passion for meads with her and some of his home-brew recipes, they realized the timing was perfect and the stars were aligned – a universe of opportunity was realized!
Their Meads are available in retail stores, bars and restaurants in AZ and their Mead Club, as well as through on-line orders.
Celestial Artisan Meadery is creating liquid art and sharing it with the world.
