I guess it would be better, but it wouldn't solve the 'not everybody votes' issue. It would just make those who do vote more involved (hopefully) because so is their money.

I'm not surprised a lot people can't find the United States on a map, a lot of people can't tell you who won the Civil War, or who fought in the war of 1812... if it dosen't apply directly to them they don't care.
I only know that one because the Canadian government was advertising their website for the bicentennial... I had no idea myself till this summer when I went and read it all. Nasty situation all around. Just don't ask who won. I don't think anyone really did.
I did at least know who won your Civil War.
And I'd have been wrong about the number of states, but that's probably because I'm so used to hearing about the 51st state, generally in jokes pertaining to Canada... however, I can at least correctly name and locate all the provinces and territories of my own country, but I don't have anywhere near as many to worry about!

Vance, I respect and greatly appreciate your service. I also believe those who have sacrificed their lives for the rest of us deserve the highest honors.
However, politics and religion are topics that tend to raise passions and inflame the conversations. Folks around here have a remarkable ability to keep the discussions at a high level, and I will encourage everyone to continue to do so. If this thread degenerates it will be locked, blocked and purged.

Have you ever watched the “Jay Walking” segment that appears from time-to-time on the Jay Leno show? Jay goes walking down the street asking random people "common knowledge" questions. It’s hilarious… but also very sad. It shows that a lot of young people know almost nothing about world events and American history. They can easily identify reality show “celebrities”, but cannot identify world leaders.
Jay Leno even has a “Battle of the Jay walking All-Stars” where the dumbest of the dumb compete in a Jeopardy-style format. I believe the contestants think they are realizing their 15 minutes of fame rather than being exposed as fools.
