Actually I read a study a few months ago that said the same people who pirate the most stuff from the internet are also the biggest spenders on netflix/itunes...

And would it really be so bad to only have determined (and hopefully informed) voters voting? You could wear an "I voted!" button like they give out "I gave blood!" stickers... ;D

I guess it would be better, but it wouldn't solve the 'not everybody votes' issue. It would just make those who do vote more involved (hopefully) because so is their money.

But it is not over!

Yay for Bathhouse Barry!
He killed Bin Ladin
An Ambassador
Two Navy Seals
A hero Techie destroying code books
The economy, we get to have a Depression!
And the Bill of Rights after a Justice or two Die or retire.

So refreshing to hear this. Glad to hear you are not delusional like many of the electorate. } I'm thinking he will deny he had a second term so he can run again. And the press will let him get away with it.

people responded with anywhere from 48 to 52.
as for the pageant question,, it was HUGE because of the idiotic answer. but what really got me was the question. i will see if i can post a link.

i dont know if this is going to help you any, as it is a link to you tube.
if you can follow it.

question was: recent polls have shown one fifth of U.S. americans cannot locate the united states on a world map, why do you think this is?

of course her answer was a complete rambling of total nonsense, and very funny.
but seriously,,, one fifth cannot find the U.S.? REALLY?????

I'm not surprised a lot people can't find the United States on a map, a lot of people can't tell you who won the Civil War, or who fought in the war of 1812... if it dosen't apply directly to them they don't care.

or who fought in the war of 1812...

I only know that one because the Canadian government was advertising their website for the bicentennial... I had no idea myself till this summer when I went and read it all. Nasty situation all around. Just don't ask who won. I don't think anyone really did.

I did at least know who won your Civil War.

And I'd have been wrong about the number of states, but that's probably because I'm so used to hearing about the 51st state, generally in jokes pertaining to Canada... however, I can at least correctly name and locate all the provinces and territories of my own country, but I don't have anywhere near as many to worry about! :D

skunk, this is precisely why i think a questionnaire should precede a vote.
you know squat? your vote counts for squat! but even a 0/5 score,, your vote would still count for 0.01 so you still get a vote. or a 0.1 sorry. i did mean 1/10. not 1/100.

chevette girl, you are excused. i doubt i know as much as i should about canadian history.

I thought this was a partisan-free zone.

Vance, I respect and greatly appreciate your service. I also believe those who have sacrificed their lives for the rest of us deserve the highest honors.

However, politics and religion are topics that tend to raise passions and inflame the conversations. Folks around here have a remarkable ability to keep the discussions at a high level, and I will encourage everyone to continue to do so. If this thread degenerates it will be locked, blocked and purged.

I was going to say, we've already shown an impressive ability to have a religious discussion without getting religious, so let's keep the politics out of our political discussion...

And Vance, I'd also like to thank you for your service. I admire anyone who does a job I could never do.

Have you ever watched the “Jay Walking” segment that appears from time-to-time on the Jay Leno show? Jay goes walking down the street asking random people "common knowledge" questions. It’s hilarious… but also very sad. It shows that a lot of young people know almost nothing about world events and American history. They can easily identify reality show “celebrities”, but cannot identify world leaders.

Jay Leno even has a “Battle of the Jay walking All-Stars” where the dumbest of the dumb compete in a Jeopardy-style format. I believe the contestants think they are realizing their 15 minutes of fame rather than being exposed as fools.

Apologies

A reading of History by Leonard Nathan

The good guys lost the city first;
The bad guys should never have won that battle,
but did and turned the good guys out to starve
or butchered them as they had butchered cattle.

The bad guys lost the city next;
The worse guys swarmed the walls from land and sea
til heroes of evil parcelled out the widows.
O then how good those bad guys seemed to be!

The worse guys lost the city next;
Shaggy brutes slashed in from west and east
To drag them from their temples by the hair,
For worse guys were too gentle for this beast.

Yet who but this beast assembled later,
Three to a corner, stricken by whispered fact
That powers of darkness hover off the coast
And nothing could prevent their being sacked.

The future plainly belongs to evil;
To good, the past; and for the present—well,
Good guys and bad guys mingle in the market;
Business was never better. Time will tell.

Pour a libation for all the good men left holding the bridge in a losing cause.

Brave men and women on the wall

Thruout warfare, brave men have been left holding the bag. I just want to salute them all. Not trying to threaten anyone. Just honoring the fallen.
