I can't imagine a land border, where you get stopped in your car. Must be weird not being surrounded by water.
I recently drove for 5 days straight without a border or ocean.

Well, you can get there in your car, but there is not a land border between the state of Michigan and Canada. Save for the Ohio/Indiana side, and Wisconsin in the Upper Peninsula, we are surrounded by water. You can drive across a bridge at three locations (Detroit, Sarnia, and Sault Ste. Marie), or go under the river in a tunnel in Detroit, but otherwise, you'll need a boat.

Speaking of starting a meadery, kind of funny, but in twenty-plus years of meadmaking, one thing I never thought I was going to need to make a batch is a lawyer.

This made me laugh a lot. You should totally make a new recipe and name it something like "I OBJECT!" with a picture of a bee holding a gavel on it...wearing a little white wig.

What would lawyer mead taste like?

I can confirm you need a passport now. :(

We're thinking of driving to WI this August and going through Ontario so we can visit Munro in London and B Nektar & Ken in Detroit. Coming back, however, we have to go through Ohio to avoid the border and the "you might need to pay customs duty on these bottles" fiasco. So yes, our entire route is dictated by mead and customs law. Ha!

I bought 8 bottles (750ml) of wine in NY last year, drove back into Niagara Falls Canada, showed them the reciept that I had paid taxes on them at the point of purchase and was all set. When I drove back into Port Huron the next day, they didn't even ask. You only have to pay duty on items bought in the duty free that are over the limit of your tax free goods for that trip.

Also...you DO NOT need a passport, but either an enhanced drivers license or Nexxus card at land crossings only. I've crossed into Canada 100's of times using my enhanced drivers license and only recently got a passport for my upcoming trip to Mexico. Air and sea crossings though, you do need a passport. Ferry crossing's count as land crossings, we do this all the time in Marine City, MI.

One more thing, if I really feel the urge, I can ride a my bicycle to either B. Nektar or the upcomming Schramm's...yes, I see you all turning green with envy :PP

News from the front:

The meadery was being painted today, and that job may take into next week. We are assembling the package of equipment that will make the place a complete location: refrigeration, furniture, glassware, etc. There is a batch in progress at French Road Cellars, our contract production location, and they nailed the ginger recipe. It will be ready for our opening, along with whatever we can get cobbled together once our licensing comes through.

We will welcome any and all GotMeaders with open arms.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate it, and a joyous weekend to all, regardless.

Yours,
Ken

Estimated date of opening is getting closer. I'd say July 15 (my birthday!), with a limited card of meads, and the full line-up by Mead Day. We are waiting on a single detail to get our State license, our recipe formulas are submitted, and one batch is waiting for label approval.

I am stressed, geeked, tired, and full of anticipation. We have great food options on our menu, and the place looks very nice. I'll work on posting some pics this week.

Thanks to everyone or your support and interest. We fully intend to sell mead on line, but we'll get there in phases. First we have to make a little money. T-shirts, hoodies and hats (made in the USA) will be available VERY soon.

So exciting! I'll be planning a trip out once the doors are open, I cant wait to purchase a few bottles online whenever that may be. Good Luck Ken, not that you need it.

I'll be there the first weekend in August. We're driving to WI to see family, and I figured I might as well visit Detroit on the way. B Nektar, Schramm's, and Jolly Pumpkin!

So, what time will you be open? ;)
