I know this thread's been put away for a while but there's a few of us who are new around here, good to get to know some of the other folks.

-Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll. Wait, I forgot, I'm married! And, well, it's been many a year since my college days. So let me rephrase that: going to sleep early, ibuprofen for my aches and pains, and listening to old songs that the young people say, "my grandpa loves that album!" Actually, I'm only 35, but it sure feels like more in the mornings :p

Are you sure we weren't twins separated at birth?? I'm 35, married, inherited musical tastes from my dad's era (I generally like the heavier stuff from 1968 onwards) plus a lot of heavy metal (especially Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper and Scorpions but some newer stuff too, like from the 90's) and classic rock, already arthritic...

We do a lot of board gaming and tabletop roleplaying games, my husband's more into the heavy strategic games but I don't have the patience anymore...

I own a pony (since I was 16, so she's 21 going on 5) and so I ride, I do Aikido (primarily defensive martial art), Iaido (sword katas), and armoured medieval fighting, recently took up jogging (hence the ibuprophen addiction). My husband and I aren't in the SCA (I've heard horror stories about our area's political BS) but we have a lot of friends who are or were, I've always been into historical fiction, fantasy and sci-fi and something else I inherited from my dad is the will to try just about anything.

I especially like making use of the stuff that grows around me and figuring out how people made things without modern conveniences, I started with making jams and jellies and graduated into winemaking which naturally led to meadmaking...

Things I've dabbled with that have stuck: beadwork, wirework jewelry, crocheting and sewing (can't follow a pattern though), houseplants, glass etching, wood carving (it's not done till I've bled on it), breadmaking including sourdough, baking, photograpy, armourmaking, and keeping my decrepit '82 Chevette on the road.

Wow I feel like the kid of the group. I'm 29 and have been brewing mead for the past 3 years. I have been an Electrician for the past 13 years, which I only do know to feed my mead addiction;D.
Actually I like the solar work I do now.
I do a lot of electrical work for a local brewery, and even get to help them make beer, which I do for beer. So I think its a win-win:p
I am one of Jehovah's Witness, so always reading the bible and related material.
Made it to Comic-Con this year and was just blown away.
Love music of all kinds, even country. Just wish I knew how to play something.
If anyone is down in So-Cal stop by and I will buy ya a pint.
Oh yea just made my first big batch. Did a simple orange mead. I was able to get a 35gal. stainless steel fermenter. Made about 32 gallons in one sitting. started out with 1130 and last I checked was down to about 1030. Should be bottling in the next week or so.

Besides making mead, cider and ales, I hunt and fish, use to build musical instruments (waiting for my youngest daughter to graduate college so I can afford to build a new woodshop), and try very hard to spoil my grandchild. My wife also loans me out to her friends as "Mr. Fixit". All this plus work keeps fairly busy!

I have not gotten into the gaming world too much, but played Travian for a short time and have seen the 'evils' of World of Warcraft...so I won't start that one for fear I will never stop!!

WoW is evil. Try LOTRO, you'll like it better. And its going free to play on September 10th.

(Shameless plug, I know)

Guess what I do in my free time?

Thanks for bringing this one alive again Chevette Girl!
I enjoyed reading through it.

I am a Freight Forwarder by Day- Crafty Chick by night (and weekend!)

I love music-I was in band for a while, but got to annoyed with politics so I'm currently looking to start my own band. I sing and write songs-Mostly Alt Rock/Metal and some Folk Rock

I love beads-mostly seed beads and am a contemporary bead artist. I primarily work with needle weaving techniques, but lately have been doing a lot of bead embroidery.

I love Fire and Glass-So I mixed them, and became a lamp worker. I've been making beads for almost 5 years now and still learn something new every time I sit down in front of my torch.

I love to read-almost anything! Fiction-Poetry, Philosophy, Psychology
I was a Hypnotherapist for many years. I don't have a practice anymore, however I like to stay on top of what new and exciting in the field, My training, work, and teaching in this field has been an awesome journey!

I live in Central W/C of FL, In fact I'm right across the street from the Gulf-so I like to hangin' out on the beach and flying my kite-at any hour! I kind of collect kites too..It's a sickness...

And in between all that-I make MEAD!

Blessed be the Bees,
Tygia

Hee hee, now don't I feel dumb for preordering the lifetime membership in LOTRO (but you're right, the people on LOTRO are way nicer than the idjits I've met on WOW)... speaking of which, I really need to log on and kick some monsters and get our kinhouse out of hock again... maybe when I'm done with the crabapples... but then will be the wild grapes... and then I have to do something with all this fruit I've accumulated in my freezer again... this is how I forgot to mention it in my original post! Dangit!

OK, I'll play. I may have something back in the dark depths of this thread, but let's put it up front so it's easy to find.

For a living, I work as the video telecommunications manager for an educational service agency. We do training video for teachers, as well as videoconferences and (when we actually get to have some fun) some instructional material for students. The team started off as primarily video, but now it supports all kinds of instructional technology.

Live in Michigan, just north of Detroit. I have a small orchard that ranges from about 15 to 20 trees, depending on what I put in or take out. This year, the plum and one peach have to go, but a new plum and peach and a bunch of cherry whips will come in. Also have raspberries and black currants. I used to play the guitar and sing some, and even made some money at it, but lately it collects more dust than attention.

My original hobby is fishing. I love to fly fish, especially for trout and salmon, but I also have a pretty good collection of spinning gear. If it has fins, and I can cast to it, I'll give it a shot. I tie my own flies, and love places like Alaska and Chile. I'll bring the mead if you'll share a few choice locations. You help with tight lines, I promise I have tight lips. The National Homebrewers Conference falls during the heart of Hex hatch - the best big-fish hatch in Michigan. Deciding between those two makes my heart ache and my brain smoke.

Reading is mostly non-fiction. I love armchair physics; Hawking and Lederman and the like. Richard Rhodes, Michael Pollan, Malcolm Gladwell.

Mostly, though, my spare time is spent on mead - making it, writing about it, talking to clubs and conferences about it, selling it, growing, picking and prepping fruit to make it. I love good beer, but while I used to make a something interesting almost every other weekend, I haven't brewed a batch in 5 years. Wine also takes up some time - I love good wine, especially great stuff for reasonable prices, and I love learning about it. I tend to think learning in depth about wine makes one a better meadmaker. Oskaar?? Natural wine is getting a lot of my attention lately, but I am not a zealot - I'll still enjoy a bottle that may not have been blessed by the gods of that realm.

And I waste way too much time on Facebook and discussion boards.

I'm currently in Albany, NY, though I'm finishing up a PhD in archaeology from University at Buffalo. Most of my time is spent traveling for research and writing. Due to my studies and research, I don't have a ton of free time, but what time I have is usually spent playing D&D and making mead. I'm also going to make my first batch of beer this upcoming week or so (an oatmeal stout).

I have a few friends who belong to the local homebrewing clubs, and I'm thinking about joining one of those to gain some outside opinions about my mead and beer.

Hey, fun!

I have lived in Alaska nearly my whole life, since 6 years old (I'm 30 now). During the day, I work as an electrical engineer. Most of my work is focused on rural development projects.

My main hobby is photography. I prefer using traditional darkroom techniques and also do an assortment of historical printing methods (cyanotype, gum bichromate). Since I sit in front of a computer all day at work, it is relaxing to hide in the room with the red light. If that is not bad enough, I also build pinhole cameras.

For reading, I like sci-fi and fantasy. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and Terry Goodkind are my favorites.

Kite flying, hiking, cooking, and mead making are somewhat lesser hobbies. I am also a nationally certified taekwondo referee, although I am not currently a member of any school.

Alright, I'll play too. I'm 29 and I have been making mead for about 6 months now. Originally from Texas, but I have been living in NC for the last 9 years. I have been working as an electronics technician for the last 6 years.

My hobbies tend to change monthly, but here is the run-down of what I do regularly. I have 2 freshwater and 2 saltwater aquariums. I build and repair computers for friends and family. I try to go skydiving every other weekend (though it has been about a month now).

I hunt, fish, camp, hike and whatever else I can find to get me outdoors. I like to cook and if that involves my grill or my smoker, all the better. Wood working, metal working, leather working, the list goes on. Oh and let us not forget: making mead, wine, cyser, and cider. Haven't made a beer yet, but I will soon.

My reading habits are just as scattered as my hobbies: philosophy, religions (all),survival, fiction, supernatural, guns and shooting, and technology.

Even as a self proclaimed geek, I have never played D&D (or WOW), been to a Ren Fair, liked Sci-Fi or fantasy, or been interested in the SCA. I understand the draw for other people: I'm just not wired that way I guess.

During the nice weather months I'm all about hiking, camping, fishing and above all else; mountain biking. Specifically downhill and free ride.

I don't ski or snowboard, so I have a tendency to play a ton of video games in the colder months.. Having knee surgery tomorrow, so my summer officially ends today. Going to start another 3 gallon batch tonight though. Never been to a ren fair, although I bet it'd be fun. Most of my gaming revolves around first person shooters, but have been totally stuck on warhammer online since bulding a capable machine to play it.

Hobbies (stuff I do for fun):

Mead / cider / brewing - 37 batches since we started counting, primarily mead. Strangely enough our ciders are a much bigger hit to date.

Beekeeping - one hive this year, two next year.

Camping - every free weekend we get, and we tend to avoid pay sites.

Computer stuff - my work involves these computer things so I see a lot of them. Sometimes I need a double-helping so I write software at home too.

Books - Lots of fantasy and scifi, and I love a good, LONG series. Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Stephen King, Greg Iles, Herbert... too many to list.

Music - Progressive Metal with a sprinkling of everything else 'cept country and rap. Favorite band: Dream Theater.

Work: Yes, I work. 8 hours @ work, 3 hours commuting (2 hrs/day on a bus with wifi so it's not as bad as it sounds).

Other than that I probably spend a majority of my time working on random house projects. I figure since we own it we might as well make it ours.

Some of my hobbies are what would almost label me as an otaku. Anime, manga, garage kits, and j-metal. This is also what led to the name of my next mead I plan on brewing (at least as soon as the move to the new house happens and I can find all my brewing gear again).

I also love fantasy books, my personal library hits close to 1500 books. Some of my favorite authors include Terry Pratchett, Robert Asprin, Piers Anthony.

As for music, it seems the longer I live in or near large cities the more my past as a hick from Wyoming affects my music. I now own every Chris LeDoux cd I could find. And these are sitting next to my Cradle of Filth cds right now.

I did the same a few years back. I am a huge fan of electronic music (trace mostly but others can do) but every now and again I yearn for old Chris and a few others. I guess it's a displace WY hick thing. ;)

I have not gotten into the gaming world too much, but played Travian for a short time and have seen the 'evils' of World of Warcraft...so I won't start that one for fear I will never stop!!

I played two whole servers of Travian, and am happily done. Our ram hammer in the second one was the largest on the server. ;D

Guess I'll update myself here. I finished my engineering PhD just over a year ago, and have since been working for a company that makes Nitinol components for the medical device industry. I run the physical testing lab, which involves a hefty dose of process development troubleshooting and helping companies collect data for FDA submissions.

Otherwise major hobbies include making mead/beer/cider, playing squash, cooking, and hanging with the wife. Now that my wife is done with her masters, I hope we'll do some more camping and short weekend trips.

I thought I replied to this thread wayyy back in the day but apparently not. I'm at work now so I don't have time to go through and read the whole thing but I noticed several people here said that they like fantasy/sci-fi books. If you haven't read George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series do yourself a favor and read it. The same goes for H.P. Lovecraft's stories. Now that that's out of the way...

Other than brewing cider (my main brewing interest), mead, wine, and just recently, beer, hmm... I trained pretty heavily in capoeira, an afro-brazilian martial art, for about two years before I got too busy with school (I'm a computer engineering major) and work (I worked in a naval research lab for 6 months and I'm about to finish up my first year at Lockheed Martin). I spend my time working out split between lifting heavy (for me anyway) at the gym, running, a smattering of capoeira, occasionally kayaking, and some bodyweight workouts. Starcraft 2 and League of Legends are the two games (both on the computer) that are really consuming my time right now. I also snowboard whenever I can in the winter. I spend as much time with my mom's dog as I can too, it's the first dog I ever had and it's a golden retriever, can't beat that!

I don't read much fantasy anymore, most SF, but I've heard that aSoIaF is possibly one of the greatest Fantasy series of all time, rivalling even the great LoTR. I definitely want to read it, but he's not finished writing it yet and seems to be very slow, and I hate waiting for more books! Bah, I shoul probably just read it anyways.

I'll bite.

I'm a 33 year old Ontarian that likes long walks on the beach.....oh wait...this isn't Lavalife.

I'm married with two kids that are 18 months apart and both are still under the age of 3 so most of my time is taken up being Dad. I'm a government lackey that works for the Ministry of the Environment mostly conducting inspections of industrial facilities.

I'm a self professed nerd that, as usual, loves anything Tolkien as well as books by Michael Stackpole, George R. R. Martin (hey Cap HBO is putting out a new series based on Sea of Swords starting in January 2011), most Star Wars novels (I think I own 40 of them), and I collect comics. That's right...nothing too deep for this fella!

For sports I mostly just play hockey (go figure), and I'm taking up snowboarding this winter. I love to cook but that's not a hobby really as my family has to eat SOMETHING. :) I've been making mead for a little over a year now, have made cider and beer once, and will be making a stout for winter quaffing hopefully in the next week.
